A Very Special Gift...
Sunday, August 1, 2010
Recently I received the most wonderful gift! My parents were visiting with my aunt and uncle in Nashville and gave me a call. My mother didn't know if I'd be interested, but my aunt was wondering if I wanted a quilt that had been my paternal great-grandmother's! The tears flowed and I was overwhelmed by this generous offer! Of course I wanted it! I am an antique dealer and have many lovely old things that are without any history for me, but I have not one item from my ancestors! I thought it would probably not be the best piece, but I didn't care what it looked like, I was just happy to be receiving it! Imagine my surprise when my parents delivered this wonderful, old, totally hand sewn quilt!
From the wonderful feed sack fabrics, I am guessing it was made in the 20's-30's era, when my great-grandmother was in her 70's. When I was born in the 50's, she was nearly 100 years old. This was passed down to my paternal grandparents and then to my aunt and uncle. I am deeply touched to have received this family heirloom~ a real treasure!
On a new subject... this weekend, on my way to the lake, I saw a new barn quilt! If you have been reading my blog for a while, you know how I enjoy these!
You can visit my earlier posts about barn quilts on past posts here and here . I love to spot a new one!

Hi Linda, What a wonderful gift! It is gorgeous, and how nice that you finally have such a beautiful piece that has some family history! I have a quilt my grandma made. I also have several my mom made that were pieced by other family members many, many years ago and she quilted for me a few years back. Enjoy :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful keepsake! I just love these simple ones. I know these are the kinds that were more likely made when women sought warmth for their families.

Oh, that is so wonderful to have something handmade by a relative. I always think it is so extra special especially as you touch it to think their hands were making this long ago. It is wonderful to be connected to the past this way. Barn quilts are too cool!
ReplyDeleteLinda, what a beautiful quilt! It is such a comforting feeling to have something that connects you to family. We have several quilts that my husband's GRANDFATHER made, and though the colors in some aren't too my liking, I am still proud to have them none the less. I know you will cherish this quilt...you are blessed.
ReplyDeleteI have got to see those barn quilts in person...going to be on the lookout when we head North in a few weeks. Best, Vicki

Beautiful postage stamp quilt and a fabulous family heirloom.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my favorite patterns and was very popular in the 1930s. I love how it is outlined in pink and yellow-very bright and cheery. Many of them were outlined in black and green.
I am so happy for you! What a beautiful treasure. Nothing better than a handmade quilt ~ especially one made by a family member. Enjoy! Love your barn pics too!!

ReplyDeleteHow I envy you. That is one of the best gifts you could receive. That quilt is one to die for. I have several but not one like this. What a blessing that you wee given this treasure.
ReplyDeleteI'm from the dairy farmland of Wisconsin, and you know it isn't only barn quilts that are becoming rare - - - the whole BARN is disappearing from the landscape.
ReplyDeleteAs large operations replace the traditional family farm, the old red barns are getting torn down. I think that is a very very very sad thing.
You are truly blessed to have this wonderful family heirloom.
ReplyDeleteCool barn quilt - I would love those, too!
Visiting from VTT~
What a treasure that is, how wonderful! And this big city girl had never heard of barn quilts before, thank you so much for sharing them with us.
