I took a little time this week to work on a simple project! I found this basket for 99 cents at the thrift store...it's nice sized...about a foot tall and 8" across the top. I decided to do a little decorative stenciling!
I didn't have any stencils that looked like what I needed, and didn't want the look of freehand on this project...so I got out stickers that were the right look and size...
What I actually used was the background surrounding the sticker letters and number.
When you peel them off, you are left with a stick on stencil. Now, I wouldn't use this technique on paper, as it would be hard to remove from the finished piece, but it worked perfectly on this uneven basket! You can move the pieces around until you get the look you like, and press down to get a good of a seal as you can. You won't get a sharp edge doing this, but that is not the look I was going for...
I used a small foam brush and black craft paint, and brushed out most of the paint first on a piece of paper for a dry brush technique. The stencil edges are close, so you have to be careful not to over paint, but I used a damp paper towel to remove any overage. You can see there is nothing perfect about this!
I used a sanding block on the dry paint to distress it even more,
and a Sharpie pen to make a period after the number letters. I thought it was a fun and simple transformation!

ReplyDeleteCute. Quick. Easy. My kind of project!
ReplyDeleteLooks great. I have been doing stenciled numbers on a fair bit of baskets around here as well. I also like the look of numbered chalkboard tags hanging on the handles. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI think this such a sharp look and simple to do. Great job. It takes the basket to a whole new level home decor.
ReplyDeleteGreat tip on using the background of a stencil since they stick. Came out really nice.
ReplyDeleteThat's so neat. I would love to find a stencil with that font.
ReplyDeleteVery clever and it looks great! You made that 99 cent basket look a lot more expensive!!

ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific idea, Linda! I never would have thought to use the negative part of the stickers as a stencil, but I am going to give this a try for sure! Thanks so much for the inspiration:) Love the basket, it's such a cool shape!!

ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I never would've thought of using the outline of a sticker as a stencil. It turned out great. I love numbers and letters used in decor.
ReplyDeleteI love this Linda. Very clever to use the negative part of the sticker as the stencil. It would have been too bold if you used the sticker by itself. Fun!
ReplyDeleteSo cute-- and very clever for the stencil.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking for just the right size hamper and lid to house my small kitchen trash can; and will probably do something like this on the outside.
I'll have to remember to use the decals...
