A Simple Project...

I took a little time this week to work on a simple project!  I found this basket for 99 cents at the thrift store...it's nice sized...about a foot tall and 8" across the top.  I decided to do a little decorative stenciling!

I didn't have any stencils that looked like what I needed, and didn't want the look of freehand on this project...so I got out stickers that were the right look and size...

What I actually used was the background surrounding the sticker letters and number.

When you peel them off, you are left with a stick on stencil.  Now, I wouldn't use this technique on paper, as it would be hard to remove from the finished piece, but it worked perfectly on this uneven basket!  You can move the pieces around until you get the look you like, and press down to get a good of a seal as you can.  You won't get a sharp edge doing this, but that is not the look I was going for...

I used a small foam brush and black craft paint, and brushed out most of the paint first on a piece of paper for a dry brush technique.  The stencil edges are close, so you have to be careful not to over paint, but I used a damp paper towel to remove any overageYou can see there is nothing perfect about this!

I used a sanding block on the dry paint to distress it even more,

and a Sharpie pen to make a period after the number letters.  I thought it was a fun and simple transformation!

Until next time...

  11. Looks great. I have been doing stenciled numbers on a fair bit of baskets around here as well. I also like the look of numbered chalkboard tags hanging on the handles. Enjoy!

  39. I love this Linda. Very clever to use the negative part of the sticker as the stencil. It would have been too bold if you used the sticker by itself. Fun!

  40. So cute-- and very clever for the stencil.
I'm looking for just the right size hamper and lid to house my small kitchen trash can; and will probably do something like this on the outside.

I'll have to remember to use the decals...
