Last week I worked on a fun re-do project...a little herb garden!
Recently, I found this garden rack at the thrift store. I'm sure you've seen hanging baskets like this...a dark black/green painted metal with scrolly goodness.
For $2, I knew I could use this in lots of ways.

I am a blogger for DecoArt and recently they sent me some of their new DecoArt Media products. This is a great line for mixed media artists and for all sorts of projects! The paints are smooth with a great consistency. I decided to play with some of the acrylic paints to change the look of this piece. I chose Titanium White, along with Transparent Red Iron Oxide and Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide.
The Transparent Iron Oxide paints inspired the whole project for me...

I know I could have just spray painted this, but I didn't want that perfect, new look. I used a soft brush...more time involved...but it allowed me to control the coverage and add texture.
Once I had the piece painted I had some fun with the transparent iron oxide paints. These are the colors of rust, and I mixed different tones. (The way the paints looked on my little lid palette inspires all sorts of artistic applications...)
Using a wet brush allowed me to add it to all the jointed areas, where rust would naturally occur, and to various areas on the bars. I used a soft cloth to remove any excess,
or on areas I wanted to lighten.

As you can see, there's nothing perfect about it. When I had the look I wanted, I coated the piece with DecoArt Media Ultra-Matte Varnish.
I have been making container herb gardens this year, and decided this would be a perfect little herb garden to hang on my gate...
I used some of my old clay pots...
It looks like an old rack hanging in my garden...I love the transformation!
I am blogger for DecoArt and received product for this project...
all opinions and the fun are my own!
Until next time...have a wonderful weekend!
You'd never know this wasn't a real rusty finish. Love it!

ReplyDeleteThe only thing better than real rust is well-done faux rust! WELL DONE, Linda. It's adorable.
ReplyDeleteWell now isn't that clever.
ReplyDeleteI like how you sealed your faux rust with Matte Varnish to keep the real rust out! ha!
