Thrifty Chicks Tray Challenge

This month's challenge is Trays!
I chose to use this old metal kitchen tray/pan.
It was quite tarnished and rusty. I have used it to display many items...like vintage silvery Christmas ornaments! But I thought it could be so much better...

I cleaned it up with a Mr. Clean pad...just taking off the grime and brightening the tray up enough to see the pretty pattern and keep a lovely patina!

I wanted to make a simple pedestal tray.  You can make one using so many kinds of items...candleholders, wood pieces, etc. There are many ideas on Pinterest.

I decided to use two wood pieces I had...a lamp base and a decorative piece leftover from other projects. I wanted a wide base to help the pedestal from being too tippy.

I love the wood, but not the stain color.  I wanted a whitewash look, so I brushed on watered down white paint and it wiped off with a paper towel until I got the look .

First, connect the wood pieces through the base with a screw and washer...

Second, connect the tray to the base with a screw through the tray.

I sealed the tray with a water base matte sealer, for a clean surface.
This won't be used with food.

This can be used in so many ways! This pretty old tray is getting a little respect now...

While we have been staying home, I have found myself crafting more, with a renewed love of homemaking skills.  I've been crocheting dish cloths in the evening, to cut down on kitchen paper use.  It has been very relaxing during a stressful time.  I haven't crocheted in quite awhile, so I am making simple double crochet rectangles.  I love using Sugar and Cream Cotton Yarn ~ it comes in many colors. There are many free patterns on Pinterest and lots of great crochet hook sets available, too.

I thought my pedestal tray would be perfect for holding my dishcloths and dish brush!

  1. NICE! I'm glad you left the pan in it's natural (albeit cleaned up) state! I've never thought of just whitewashing on a project before but great idea and it looks amazing!

  3. You have so many goodies stashed away. Where do you keep it all. Ha, who am I kidding I stuff stored everywhere.

I don't have bits and pieces as much as you. My thrifting spot doesn't have that kind of stuff that much.

Love your clothes too. Happy Easter!

  5. I love, LOVE your pan, Linda! It's a beauty and your makeover just makes it shine, in the spotlight kind of way. And way to go, you. Crocheting dishcloths is such a great way to spend some time.

  7. Very nice! The pattern and patina of the tray is quite lovely. No, I'm not doing much that's all that useful. Just the day to day stuff. I apparently don't have your craft calling.

  8. It turned out perfectly farmhouse! Adding the cloths just adds to the overall charm. I'm sure you'll use it for many other things as well. Love it. xo Kathleen

  9. I love all those old starburst pans; always pick them up when I find them. The muffin tins I use are that design. Adding the pedestal really gives it the treatment it deserves. Now you've got me thinking if I did this to loaf pan, it would fit nicely behind my kitchen sink faucet. Great idea! Love your washcloths; I totally need to learn how to crochet so I can make them, too. Always buy them at church sales, but have a stash of that wonderful yarn to use!

  11. I've never seen those starburst patterns; I really liked the slight texture and patina. I mostly crochet simple granny square afghan squares for dishcloths--while my SO is chauffeurring me around! Great for gifts and my church's bazaar. I am partial to bright colors--dishwashing is NOT my favorite job and I figure anything that makes it prettier is a good thing!

  13. This tray is amazing Linda! I love how it's pretty and purposeful all at the same time. I had NO IDEA a magic eraser could clean metal pieces up like that - so cool. Obsessed with your dish cloths too! Hugs and Happy Easter, CoCo
